Study Purpose/Description
We are conducting a research study about the impact of combined vision and hearing loss (also known as dual sensory impairment [DSI]) on older adults and the close family members who provide care. We know from previous studies we have conducted that older adults with DSI can or may experience a range of impacts including social isolation, loneliness and depression, and that DSI impacts day to day activities and going out to socialise. We also know that family members (such as a spouse, partner, adult child) are key to supporting people with DSI in their day-to-day activities.
What’s Involved?
Taking part in this study will involve attending workshops and completing interviews together with your family member.
- Workshops
There will be four workshops, each lasting around 2 hours with regular breaks.- Carer participants will attend all four workshops.
- Persons with DSI will attend three workshops (the first, third, and fourth).
- The second workshop is dedicated to carers only.
- Workshops will be held in person at the University of Sydney in November 2025 and February 2026, so participants will need to be able to travel.
- Interviews
You and your family member will take part in three interviews: at the beginning of the study, at the end, and again three months after the study finishes. Each interview will include some survey-style questions and will take no more than 45 minutes. Interviews can take place at your home or another location convenient to you.
