Study Purpose/Description
This in an online-survey designed to explore the characteristics and experiences of adults in Australia who drink alcohol.
In particular, we are interested in hearing from people 18 or older who have consumed alcohol in the past 12-months, tend to drink at least monthly and typically have more than two standard drinks when they do drink (a schooner of beer is around 1.6 standard drinks; a 150ml glass of wine about 1.5, a 375ml can of ready to drink spirits about 1.5 and a 30ml nip of spirits is 1 standard drink).
We’re interested in understanding the relationship between alcohol use and the different ways that people might cope with stress.
What’s Involved?
If you decide to take part in the research project, you will be asked to complete a brief screening questionnaire. This questionnaire will ask about your age, country of residence and experience with alcohol use over the last 12-months (e.g. ‘how often have you had six or more drinks on a single occasion?’, ‘how often have you had a feeling of guilt or remorse after drinking?’ ‘how often have you been unable to remember what happened the night before?’).
Eligible participants will then be invited to complete the survey. The survey is delivered by the online survey software ‘Qualtrics’ and is expected to take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
The survey contains questions that ask about
- You (e.g., age, living situation, cultural identity) and your experience with
- Alcohol use (e.g., quantity/ frequency over the last 12 months, reasons for drinking and what it’s like for you when you do, for example ‘If there was alcohol around, I wound up drinking it; ‘I drank more than I meant to’; ‘when I stopped, cut down or went without drinking, I felt nervous’)
- How you tend to cope with stress (e.g. distraction, relaxation, alcohol use etc; for example ‘I focused on the good things in my life’ ‘I criticised or lectured myself’ ‘I occupied my mind with something else’)
There is a chance that participants can win 1 of 5 $50 vouchers.
