Living with Anxiety study

We’re inviting people who have experienced an anxiety disorder to take part in a research study. The study aims to better understand how our genes may influence anxiety and how people respond to common medications used to treat it. By collecting survey responses from 5,000 people with anxiety, researchers hope to uncover genetic factors linked to treatment outcomes. This could lead to more effective, personalised treatment options in the future.

Study Purpose/Description

Anxiety disorders affect nearly 1 in 3 Australians and are a major cause of health burden. While medications can help, many people don’t respond well to the first one they try, and side effects are common.

The purpose of the Living with Anxiety (LwA) Study is to identify specific genetic risk factors associated with differences between individuals in both risk of Anxiety disorders and response to treatment. We hope that this research will help us learn more about Anxiety disorders, and the factors influencing why various treatments for Anxiety disorders are successful for some people and not others.

What’s involved?

There are 3 phases to the study:

  1. Provide online consent to participate in this study;
  2. Complete a 30-minute core online survey about your experiences of anxiety and treatment. There is an optional series of additional survey modules about your relationships, family background, health, and medical history;
  3. Depending on your responses to the core online survey, you may be asked to donate a saliva sample. If eligible, researchers post out a collection kit to the participant so they can donate the sample from their own home and at a time of their own convenience, and then post it back to our lab using a prepaid envelope.
