Researchers at UNSW are conducting a project to determine whether an online program delivered by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist could help adults with hypertension to improve their blood pressure and fitness level. [This study has CLOSED].

Study description/purpose

The School of Population Health and Lifestyle Clinic at UNSW are looking for volunteers to participate in a new study looking at improving the health of people who have been clinically diagnosed with hypertension.

What’s Involved?

Participants will be asked to complete the following research activities if they agree to participate:
• Measure your body composition and complete baseline assessments online
• Wear a blood pressure monitor on your wrist for 7 days
• Some participants (selected at random) will take part in a free personalised fitness program with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist for 3 months (online program)
• Some participants (selected at random) will continue their usual care for 3 months and contribute important data to our study
• Wear a blood pressure monitor on your wrist for 7 days
• Measure your body composition, complete final assessments online and send the monitor back to the study team at UNSW

Recruitment criteria

The research study is looking to recruit people who meet the following criteria:

• be 18 years of age or older;
• diagnosed with hypertension and recent clinic systolic BP ≥130 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥80 mmHg;
• willing to wear wrist-based blood pressure device for seven consecutive days at baseline and after 3 months;
• willing to undergo initial exercise tests by an Exercise Physiologist to determine eligibility;
• have access to a smartphone and the internet and feel comfortable to use it to download an App for use with a blood-pressure device, complete online assessments, and join online video consultations with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist;
• have no plans to change medications
• have a personal weighing bathroom scale; and
• independently ambulant for 200m (be confident to walk 200m or around the block unassisted).

Benefits

Participants will receive a $100 shopping gift voucher as thanks for participating. Invited participants can participate in an online focus group interview to share their experience of the study and receive an additional $50 shopping gift voucher.
